All three engines feature an engine controller which manages fuel delivery and air flow. This monitors engine and machine conditions while keeping the engine operating at peak efficiency. The controller allows the engine to respond quickly to changing application needs and provides maximum performance per litre of fuel. The D8T uses a 15-litre C15 engine (347 gross hp, 259 kW); the D9T an 18-litre C18 engine (464 gross hp, 346 kW); and the D10T a 27-litre C27 engine (646 gross hp, 482 kW).
All three machines employ an electronically-controlled, heavy-duty planetary power shift transmission with three speeds forward and three speeds reverse. They have large-diameter, high-capacity, oil-cooled clutches and an electronic modulation system that allows the operator to perform rapid changes in speed and direction.
The operator stations on the new tractors provide for significantly improved comfort while many of the units’ other features are designed to achieve ease of operation and to minimise downtime, according to the manufacturer. The tractor mainframes are built to absorb the high impact shock loads and twisting forces encountered in many applications, with durable structures, elevated sprockets and suspended undercarriages claimed to be among the key strengths of these machines. Maintenance and repair downtime is minimised and servicing is faster and easier, Caterpillar adds.
