Norway – Stadler UK has won recognition at the prestigious German-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for the design and manufacture of its fully-automated and ‘future-proofed’ municipal solid waste facility in Oslo. With a processing capacity of 30 tonnes per hour, it incorporates 14 near infrared (NIR) sorters.

A high level of automation means the plant has only two operating staff to load the waste and to remove the baled materials. The material itself is sorted by communities into colour-coded bags, ready for NIR processing by individual colour.

′With the building of its world-first, fully-automated mixed household waste plant, Stadler has shown that even the most complicated sorting processes can be undertaken,′ the judges stated. ′With this, they have shown a real concern for the environment and, at the same time, have made the working conditions for the staff considerably better.′

Stadler′s UK-based sales manager Trevor Smart observes that recycling plants are generally expected to last 25 years and that ′inevitable changes′ will occur to the waste management landscape over such a period. Therefore, a ′forward-thinking′ approach is imperative when commissioning MRFs, or rather ′the MRF of tomorrow′.
