Energy provider Iberdrola Espana and waste manager FCC Ámbito have opened EnergyLOOP, the first plant on the Iberian peninsula dedicated to recycling wind turbine blades.

The facility at Navarra in northern Spain was built to recover the components of wind turbine blades and reuse them in industries such as energy, aerospace, automotive, textiles, chemical and construction.

Transformation

An estimated 5 700 wind turbines per year will be dismantled in Europe by 2030 from repowering wind farms or from facilities reaching the end of their useful lives. The aim is to contribute to the transformation of the industry into a circular economy through the  comprehensive recycling solutions for blades. The project has involved investment of around EUR 10 million and the group says it will contribute to the creation of an innovative and dynamic value chain.

Ecosystem

The plant is backed by Iberdrola through its Perseo programme which aims ‘to facilitate access to the technologies and businesses of the future while fostering a global ecosystem of start-ups with a focus on sustainability’. Since 2008, the programme has invested EUR 200 million in a portfolio of start-ups, new companies and funds focused on tech innovation and sustainability.
