WRG – which was purchased by FCC in 2006 for £1.4 billion – says the acquisition will help the expansion of its business in north-west England. The company currently collects 13 million tonnes of refuse a year from residential, commercial and industrial customers. Its activities include energy recovery, waste treatment, recycling and landfill disposal, with its energy-from-waste facility in Kent boasting a capacity of 500 000 tonnes a year and producing 35 MW – enough to power 60 000 homes. The accompanying recycling facility has an annual capacity of 65 000 tonnes.
CAW was founded by Dave Armer in 1992 and employs 30 people. The business entered a difficult period in January last year when Cumbria County Council announced the temporary closure of seven household waste recycling centres in the south and east of the county due to its decision to terminate CAW’s contract.
