Goudsmit Magnetic Systems BV of Waalre in The Netherlands has introduced a self-cleaning, clean-flow magnet which removes very fine iron particles from powders and granules. The particles attracted by the magnet are released simply by pressing a button, thereby allowing users to mount the device in places that are difficult to access for cleaning purposes.
The system consists of two rows of powerful Neoflux bars comprising neodymium-iron-boron magnets; these are mounted one on top of the other such that product always hits the magnet. For the cleaning cycle, the magnets are taken out of the product flow; the magnetism is removed so as to release the iron particles which disappear through a chute into a receiving container. After cleaning, the magnets are returned to their operating position and production can recommence.
Another feature of the system, according to the manufacturer, is its low height of 250 mm.
Among its possible applications, the self-cleaning magnet can be used in free-fall systems in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Indeed, one such system is currently in operation within a large German chemical enterprise which manufactures Makrolon, a material used in the production of iron-free CDs.
