KG, one of Germany’s largest metal recycling companies, has announced the investment of almost Euro 30 million over two years in the treatment of auto shredder residue (ASR).
Scholz AG’s site at Leipzig-Espenhain is destined to become a flagship for the treatment of light and heavy shredder fractions from automotive and mixed scrap. Rolf Thomas, Branch Manager Regional East area of Scholz Recycling AG & Co. KG and Managing Director of SRW Metalfloat Ltd, observes: ’We will be able to process 105 000 tonnes of light fraction and 120 000 tonnes of heavy fraction per year’.
He adds: ’Our investment includes a new vertical shredder and a new plant configuration for treatment of ASR. This will further improve our recycling services in the future as we will be able to extract more material of a better quality.’ According to Scholz, the main advantage of a vertical shredder is that especially thin material such as cans can be cut efficiently and so a high bulk density can be achieved.
In order to meet current recycling quotas, the aim of the plant is to improve the efficiency of current sorting systems for the shredder residue. The expanded facility will provide the platform for high-quality plastics separation and for refuse-derived fuel.
