United Kingdom | The United Kingdom branch of paper processor SCA Recycling has received planning permission for a 200,000 tonnes materials recovery facility (MRF) in Southampton, United Kingdom.
The new plant will handle up to 100,000 tonnes of mixed dry recyclables and 100,000 tonnes of source separated recovered paper, and create over 80 new jobs. Fit-out of the existing 124,000 sq ft industrial building will commence in January, handling of waste paper will start in spring 2009, followed in the summer by plastics and metal.
The 200,000 tonnes of recyclables a year is 43,000 more than the total processed by two similar centres operated by the Swedish company in Alton and Portsmouth. The existing MRF’s handle domestic recyclables whereas Totton will process commercial, industrial and consumer materials.
SCA Recycling UK Managing Director, Ken Stevens says: ’We are delighted that planning has been granted for our MRF development and look forward to building a much needed facility producing high quality recyclables to meet the growing requirements for cost effective, sustainable alternatives to landfill.’€™
