Harz-Metall, based in Goslar in central Germany, produces waelz oxides (zinc oxide) by recycling steel residue collected after steel production.
According to Recylex, its subsidiary processes about 80,000 to 85,000 tonnes of steel residue annually to produce zinc oxide, a semi-finished zinc product. ’This measure has been taken as a result of general market trends, with a decrease in steel plant production and partial or full shutdowns by major clients generating a decline in volumes processed and a contraction in demand,’ Recylex says. It’€™s not known how long the shut down would last, the spokesman says.
In related news, capacity at German lead plant Weser Metall ‘€’ another subsidiary of Recylex – has been raised to 135,000 tonnes annually from about 120,000 tonnes, and further expansion is planned. Recylex, previously named Metaleurop, has major recycling operations in France, Germany and Belgium and plans to open a battery recycling plant in Algeria by the end of this year.
