A lead acid battery processing plant designed by Recylex engineers is being built at Aïn Ouassara, 200 km to the South of Alger (Algeria). Operations should start at the end of December 2008.
With 15 employees, the plant should have a year-round annual processing capacity of 20 000 tonnes of batteries. The French firm Recylex currently processes about 130,000 tonnes of batteries a year in Europe. Materials from this plant will for the most part be used to supply Recylex’s lead smelter in Nordenham (Germany) and also Recylex’€™s subsidiary CP2 SAS (Villefranche-sur-Saône), specialised in plastics recycling.
Eco Recyclage, a company incorporated under Algerian law, of which Recylex holds 33% capital, will operate the lead acid battery processing plant. The other associates are an Algerian partner, expert on local recycling and supplies, and a French metal recovery company which already carries out a business in Algeria.
As soon as it is built, the factory in Aïn Ouassara will operate in compliance with ISO 14001 and French standards, in particular regarding environmental matters, Recylex guarantees. According to a statement, the Algerian market holds interesting prospects in terms of battery recycling with 32 million inhabitants, a car fleet enjoying 6% annual growth and a recycling branch which is still little structured.
Recylex’€™s presence in Algeria through Eco Recyclage reflects the group’€™s strategy for exporting its unique expertise in battery processing. The company also processes plastics from automotive and industrial batteries, and is also a specialist in the recycling of zinc from electronic steel and the production of zinc oxides and of special metals for the electronics industry.
