Chile | Chilean tech recycling company Recycla has reached capacity to separate 4,000 tonnes per year of waste, following the opening of its expanded waste separation plant.
Located in capital Santiago’s Pudahuel district, the plant – which used to process 700t/y of e-waste – was inaugurated by President Sebastian Piñera.
The project involved expanding the plant’s waste disassembling, storage, commercialization and shipping areas. The plant separates recyclable waste, which is then shipped to the firm’s final disposal facility.
The expansion cost 150mn pesos (US$293,000), and will have an important impact on Chile’s capacity to handle e-waste, an official says.
According to Recycla’s projections, the plant will handle 3,800t/y of recyclable non-hazardous waste, while the remaining 200t will be comprised of hazardous waste.
At the plant’s inauguration, Piñera said a project to improve the country’s waste management legislation will be sent to congress during H2. The new law will allow a safer, more environmentally friendly and more intelligent use of waste, the president said.
