United States / France | French battery recycling specialist Recupyl is entering the North American market by establishing Recupyl Battery Solutions (RBS) – a joint venture with Michigan-based Battery Solutions Inc.
This new company will dedicate itself to developing local recycling of batteries in the USA. Two mechanical lines for both alkaline and lithium-ion batteries – with a total capacity of 5 million lb per year – will operate at the RBS site in Brighton, Michigan, following the facility’s scheduled opening in the second quarter of 2010.
While Recupyl initially specialised in portable batteries such as those used in phones and lap-tops, RBS will also focus on recycling batteries for electric vehicles, including processing scraps. This development will be made possible by the company’s new technologies in recycling advanced electrode materials such as those found in hybrid and electric vehicle batteries. The company specialises in implementing industrial processes with low energy consumption, minimum airborne environmental emissions and with very low direct or indirect carbon dioxide emissions. Due to flexibility, low capital investment and high returns, Recupyl’s technology is said to offer the possibility of locating recycling facilities close to waste streams.
Recupyl is currently focusing on the development of multiple facilities around the world instead of sending used batteries to a single, centralised facility. Several plants have already been opened in Poland, Singapore, Spain, the UK, France and in other countries where the global Recupyl network is dominant.
Battery Solutions Inc. accepts all battery types, under any circumstances, from anywhere in the USA. Its recycling services are designed to make battery recycling as simple and hassle-free as possible.
