Record steel output in 2005

Asia’s crude steel production surged 15% last year to 583.8 million tonnes to account for more than half of the global output total. At nearly 25%, China recorded the highest year-on-year growth among global steel producers, as well as the highest overall production of 349.4 million tonnes – equivalent to nearly 31% of world output. Strong growth in India saw the country’€™s production increase almost 17% to 38.1 million tonnes. Africa and the Middle East were the only other regions to post year-on-year crude steel output growth of just over 7% in both cases, notes IISI.
Other parts of the world cut their production in order to bring supply more into line with demand. North American crude steel production fell more than 5% to 127 million tonnes while EU steel producers reduced their output by 3.6% to 186.4 million tonnes. CIS production edged 0.3% lower to 112.9 million tonnes while South America registered a fall of around 1% to 45.3 million tonnes, according to IISI.
