The establishment, the first of its kind, is expected to dismantle some 15 000 missiles each year and will employ some 400 people. The opening of the centre signals a departure from the common practice of destroying weapons by controlled detonation.
Recovered explosives will be reused in new weapons and elsewhere, such as in the mining industry.
