The review will encompass two separate studies, the first of which will assess the feasibility of shifting production of approximately 40 000 tonnes of zinc metal to the Hobart unit from its Port Pirie operation in South Australia. Should the company pursue this option, it would lead to the expansion of the Hobart facility, establishing it as one of the largest producers of zinc metal in the world with production in excess of 300 000 tonnes per annum.
Nyrstar, which combines Umicore of Belgium and Australia’s Zinifex, has also committed A$ 2.3 million (US$ 2 million) to study options to modernise smelting technology and increase multi-metals recycling at Port Pirie. Chief Operating Officer Greg McMillan says that, while no final decisions have been made with respect to either site, the company is announcing its plans so that it could openly engage with its stakeholders and begin the detailed work necessary to progress the two studies.
The company expects to take three months to assess the viability of moving zinc production to Hobart. If approved, such a decision would take a further 12 months to implement. The smelting technology review is expected to take six months.
