US electronics recycling specialist Sunnking has doubled its processing capacity with the installation of a new shredder.

In response to increased demand and mounting volumes of scrap, Sunnking’s existing dual-shaft shredder had become a bottleneck in operations – struggling to keep pace and incurring rising labour and maintenance costs.

The New York-based operator invested in the Untha RS100 shredder, a four-shaft machine capable of processing around 13 tonnes per day, double the throughput of its previous set-up.

Hungry for material to shred

‘Before installing the RS100, we simply didn’t have enough hours in the day to shred all the incoming material,’ says Phil Bove, director of business development at Sunnking. ‘We’ve gone from being overwhelmed with equipment to wondering where we’re going to find more material to shred – which is a great problem to have.’

Founded in 2000, Sunnking is an IT asset disposition (ITAD) and e-waste recycling company that processes large volumes of discarded electronics from both commercial and residential sources. It has more than 155 collection sites and a growing number of community recycling events.

Charles Hildebrand, sales manager at Untha America, adds: ‘Sunnking’s ability to double its e-waste processing capacity with the RS100 is a testament to what this technology was engineered to achieve – robust, reliable performance in even the most demanding recycling environments.’

Expansion to the Midwest?

The shredder’s RAM system and programmable speed and torque settings allow Sunnking to tailor performance to specific input streams. Large items such as TVs and transformers, which previously risked damaging the equipment, can now be handled more safely and efficiently.

Sunnking is planning further expansion. A standalone facility in the Midwest is on the horizon, enabling the business to serve new markets and boost overall capacity.
