Ireland | A new report jumps into the Russian scrap metal market, focussing on all aspects of the Russian scrap metal recycling equipment. The report, entitled “Review of the Russian Scrap Metal Recycling Equipment Market” is published by the Irish agency Research and Markets.
In 2007 scrap metal consumption in Russia amounted to more than 270,000 tonnes, and as compared to a similar period in the year 2006, this figure has risen by 20%. The volume of automotive scrap has increased greatly. According to Research and Markets, this has led to an increasing demand for scrap metal recycling equipment.
The report concludes domestic production of such equipment is still poor, therefore about 90% of the market has been occupied by foreign companies and this tendency is most likely to continue in the future. At the end of the year 2006 Donpressmash, the leading Russian manufacturer, had to reduce its staff by 400 employees.
The range of the Russian-made equipment does not meet the market demand in full. For example, Russia does not manufacture alligator shears and scrap shearing machines. Imported equipment (except for equipment manufactured in China) beats its Russian-made counterparts in every respect. However, its price is much higher. Therefore many Russian enterprises now acquire reconditioned foreign equipment, the price of which is similar to that of the Russian equipment, but the quality and the operating performance of which are much better.
Lately experts have noted that the quality of the Russian-made equipment has been improving and its price has been coming down, which has a positive effect on the market demand.
