The new ’cold line’ will be capable of recycling 350 000 refrigerators per annum.
With four processing lines, the Lesquin facility already boasted the ability to handle annually some 200 000 monitors/TV tubes, 150 000 small domestic appliances and 100 000 washing machines. According to Envie 2e nord and Coolrec, the site will recycle in excess of 18 000 tonnes of electrical and electronic appliances in 2008, including materials that are very harmful to the environment. Stressing the innovative aspect of the enlarged facility, the two companies claim that contaminating substances such as rare earths present in cathode ray tubes, as well as the CFC gases and pentane found in large domestic refrigerators, will now be isolated and processed rather than ending up in the atmosphere or in the ground.
With product life-cycles becoming shorter, France is now generating more than 1.3 million tonnes of electrical and electronic waste each year.
