As most people in the industry are aware, EU Directive 2002/95/EC on ’Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)’ will prohibit imports into the EU of certain new electrical and/or electronic equipment put on market after July 1 this year. The regulations apply to equipment made of materials containing more than 100 parts per million (ppm) of cadmium or more than 1000 ppm each of mercury, lead, hexavalent chromium, poly-brominated biphenyls and poly-brominated diphenyl ethers.
The NITON portable X-ray fluorescence analysers for on-site, non-destructive RoHS screening are used for testing polymers, solders and electronic components for RoHS, ELV and WEEE compliance verification screening. Thermo Electron has released its new version 5.1 analyser software offering several new features and performance improvements, including an advanced thickness correction for improved direct analysis of polymeric materials. For several years, Thermo’s portable RoHS analysers have been used to quantify restricted elements in plastic matrices down to 5 mm thickness. The new thickness correction algorithm available in version 5.1 offers the ability to compensate test results for even ultra-thin plastic materials.
In addition to the thickness correction feature for direct plastics measurements, the version 5.1 analyser software features six language options, improved analytical accuracy and element additions to already extensive calibration matrices. Version 5.1 software is currently available on all new NITON RoHS instruments, and is available as a free upgrade to customers with existing compatible analysers.
