United States – Sims Municipal Recycling has officially opened its US$ 110 million (Euro 77 million) Material Recycling Facility (MRF) in New York City, claimed to be the largest in the USA. The project is a key part of mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030 for a ‘greener, greater New York’.
The facility is located in Brooklyn and has the capacity to process 1000 tonnes of material per day, shipping sorted commodities to markets around the world.
Developed as part of a long-term contract between Sims Municipal Recycling and the New York City Department of Sanitation, the plant will serve as the principal processing facility for all of the metal, glass and plastic recyclables from the city’s kerbside collections.
New York City has also introduced a new electronics collection scheme ahead of its ban due to come into effect in 2015 on the disposal of e-scrap via the household waste stream.
