France | Tyre manufacturing giant Michelin and industrial waste management company Suez will open a recycling centre at Michelin’s former tyre plant at Toul in France as part of the tyre-maker’s pledge to retain activity at the site. Financial details are not disclosed.
In a joint statement the two French groups said the project, to be called Campus, will process used materials, notably rubber-based items from Michelin’s factories, as well as conducting research into recycling techniques.
The continuation of the Michelin plant is backed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was visiting last week the workers and management at the manufacturers, where hundreds of layoffs are on the horizon.
Michelin announced in October last year that it expected to book around Euro 130 million (US$ 190 million) in charges related to the closure of the plant, and that part of this would contribute towards maintaining local employment.
