Metso Recycling cements position in North America

United States – Metso Recycling has installed of a large parts inventory for scrap shears and balers at the corporate distribution centre in Columbia. This means Metso will be able to better serve its customer base in the region, helping them to minimise downtime by supplying critical parts with shorter lead times.

‘For our customers in North America, this move means shorter lead times, lower freight charges and less potential equipment downtime waiting for parts,’ comments Bob Pfeffer, Product Manager, Shears and Balers, Metso Recycling. ‘We are very pleased with this installation, as it cements our commitment to the North American market,’ he notes.

Already, four Metso PowerCut shears and two Metso 80/104 shredders have been sold to Pacific Steel and Recycling. ‘Everybody’s looking for what’s called ‘cut grades’ and the Metso shears produce as fine a cut grade mill package as you can supply,’ comments Pat Kons, vice president scrap operations at the recycling firm.

Today’s scrap business is ‘all about quality’, stresses Pacific Steel’s marketing manager Ken Halko. ‘So when the steel mill calls and says they will take your 6000 tonnes and won’t take the other guys’ because of your quality – that’s what keeps us ahead,’ he states.

Moreover, the high density of the scrap also helps the recycler to reduce transportation and operating costs. ‘It’s important for us to ship everything at weight,’ Halko says. ‘And the Metso PowerCut shear has helped us get there.’
