Major facility for Bulgarian household refuse

Bulgaria – A domestic refuse recycling plant costing around Euro 25.5 million has been formally opened in Bulgaria by the country’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

The facility, located in the village of Ezerovo some 10 km east of the Black Sea city of Varna, is headed up by Bulgarian consortium Ecoinvest Assets; it covers some 16 000 square metres, employs 40 people and can process 140 000 tonnes annually.
The plant is the first of its type in Bulgaria and will process the household refuse of Varna and several adjacent municipalities. The waste will be separated automatically and by hand according to type in readiness for recycling. It is planned to add an anaerobic installation for treating organic waste within the next few months; the biogas emitted during anaerobic processing will be used to produce electricity.
The facility was built in three months by Recycling Bulgaria in partnership with German company Eggersmann Anlagenbau. In a media statement, Recycling Bulgaria confirms it is in talks with other Bulgarian municipalities for the construction of similar facilities.
