The Grantham-based company will work with London Remade to provide systematic de-manufacturing techniques coupled with state-of-the-art reprocessing technology. Minimum investment of £25 million (US$ 45 million) will be provided within 18 months, thereby creating over 500 jobs to tackle the 170 000 tonnes of WEEE which London disposes of each year. These levels are expected to rise with the British government’s imminent implementation of the EU WEEE Directive which makes producers responsible for taking back and recycling this material stream. London Remade is currently proposing a range of suitable sites for development, with plans to put the new plant in place by early next year in preparation for producer responsibility in April 2007.
Joseph Quigley, CEO for environCom, said: ’environCom aims to work in partnership with the London boroughs to provide the solution the Mayor of London has been calling for in order to tackle the growing problem of recycling London’s e-waste. We will establish a world-class e-waste solution in London.’
London Remade’s Chief Executive Daniel Silverstone added: ’This year, we’ve secured an additional 1.9 million tonnes of recycling capacity and our partnership with environCom sees us well on the way to developing at least 10 projects over the next five years. This will enable the capital to reprocess an additional 200 million tonnes of waste.’
In Grantham, environCom has already installed processing capacity at fully-licensed facilities for the treatment of WEEE and fridges; the site has been operational since 2004.
