According to media reports, an amendment had been planned to extend incentives into 2008 and to cover the scrapping of additional vehicle models.
Mr Bonelli argues that the 2008 budget should include measures to boost public transport rather the automotive sector if environmental goals are to be achieved. Industry officials say the incentives – directed at car owners who scrap older, more polluting cars for newer, cleaner models – have boosted new car sales this year and would prevent a sharp downturn in 2008.
