Ukraine | Ukrainian steel pipe and railway wheel producer Interpipe has begun upgrading the capabilities of the scrap supplier Dneprvtormet which it acquired in 2008. These moves are designed virtually to double the latter’s processing capacity and ensure Interpipe’s scrap needs are covered.
The company is set to install four additional scrap processing units to boost Dneprvtormet’s annual capacity by 90% from 950 000 tonnes to around 1.8 million tonnes. Interpipe also plans to install Akros Henshel stationary and mobile shearing machines at Dneprvtormet processing sites, including those in Lugansk and Nikopol.
Even though it intends to phase out its open hearth furnaces at some point, Interpipe’s scrap requirements will soar once it commissions and ramps up its electric arc furnace-based steel meltshop, Interpipe Steel, which is currently under construction. Working at a full capacity of 1.3 million tonnes per year of billet, Interpipe Steel will melt scrap at a rate of 151 000 tonnes per month.
