Tomra empowers advanced collection on Tasmania

Tomra will provide a network of 49 refund points across Tasmania.

Tomra Sorting has been appointed as the sole reverse vending machine solution provider for Tasmania. Its technology was commissioned for the island’s new collection scheme.

Tasmania’s Recycle Rewardsdeposit return system (DRS) is set to begin in mid-2025. Tomra will provide a network of 49 refund points across the island. It is the sixth DRS in Australian supported by Tomra technology.

‘We will bring our most modern reverse vending solutions to Tasmania,’ says Marius Fraurud, head of Tomra Collection. The partnership builds on ‘significant experiences’ in the New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory, Western Australian and Victorian area.

Solving the puzzle

‘Our solutions are tailored to ensure we utilise our in-depth knowledge of the Australian market to drive maximum uptime, recycling outcomes and sustainability benefits,’ Fraurud adds.

Tasmania is seen as the final piece of the deposit return system puzzle in Australia. All states and territories are now legislating for deposit return and extended producer responsibility (EPR) for single-use drink containers.

Tomra’s collection systems are now active in more than 40 countries. Earlier this year, the company installed reverse vending solutions in Ireland, Hungary and Romania.
