Scottish firm Impact Recycling has received a follow-on investment of EUR 3.8 million from venture capital company IW Capital. The funding will help the recycler expand its patented separation technology and scale operations across Europe.

Impact Recycling, based in Grangemouth, is known for its water-based density separation process called the Baffled Oscillation Separation System (BOSS). The system, developed in 2014, separates mixed plastic waste into two high-purity output streams.

95% purity

Impact Recycling is targeting polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) with both reportedly exceeding 95% purity thanks to BOSS. The company says its ability to handle both rigid and flexible plastics sets it apart in the mechanical recycling market.

Its Glasgow plant specialises in recovering medical plastic waste from the NHS, while its Peterlee site was recently expanded to recycle flexible film packaging, a long-standing challenge for conventional recyclers.

Accelerating growth

‘With strong demand from global partners and our licensing model gaining traction, we’re well-positioned to scale,’ says ceo David Walsh. He adds that the investment will accelerate business development and expansion into new markets.

Impact Recycling’s growth follows earlier support from Innovate UK and Nestlé worth more than EUR 8 million. The company also signed a licence agreement with Finnish recycler Syklo to build two BOSS plants, each capable of processing 25 000 tonnes of waste annually.

IW Capital chair Alan Armstrong says the recycler’s technology and market reach make it a strong player in a rapidly changing landscape. He notes that EU directives on recycled content continue to drive demand for scalable circular solutions.
