Initiative boosts Italy’s vehicle recycling

Italy | Recycling specialist Maind srl is to set up a number of recycling and energy recovery facilities in Italy which will be capable of processing up to 300 000 tonnes per year of automotive shredder residue (ASR).
The Verona-based company signed a public agreement with the Italian Environment Minister to “promote the development of best technologies and a management system for ASR recycling and energy recovery”. Maind has tested technologies for plastic recycling and energy production, such as the Si-Con process for recycling plastics and the Marangon energy recovery technology for production of electrical energy.
Plants and technologies will enable Maind to recycle at least 100 000 tonnes of plastics each year for the re-use market and to recover 1 kWh of electrical energy from each kilogramme of otherwise non-recyclable ASR. Once the plants are fully operational, Maind expects to produce a minimum of around 200 000 MWh of electrical energy each year – equivalent to around 420 000 barrels of oil.
The recycling specialist already runs an energy recovery plant fed by end-of-life tyres. After some modifications, the plant is expected to treat some 50 000 tonnes of ASR this year.
