Increase in Europe’s PET collections

In 2007, the overall share of fibres as an end use for recycled PET decreased from 52% to 47% (although the tonnage processed continued to grow) while sheet manufacturers boosted their consumption share to 24%. Blow moulding consumed almost 18% more recycled material last year while the increase for strapping was 32%. European exports to the Far East remained at around 14% of collected PET whereas the tonnage shipped overseas leapt some 36%.
Petcore estimates Europe’s mechanical reclamation nameplate capacity at 1.2 million tonnes for 2008, with approximately 100 000 tonnes of additional capacity planned.
