Curaçao – Last year saw a sharp drop in aluminium recycling on Curaçao but a significant improvement for plastics, according to the island’s recycling and environmental organisation Green Force.
Only 266 175 aluminium cans were collected compared to 390 000 in 2012 whereas more than 44 tonnes of plastics was amassed last year versus 25 tonnes the year before, with collections of PET bottles soaring from 288 450 in 2012 to 688 480 last year thanks to the setting-up of two new recycling centres in Zeelandia and Piscadera.
However, Green Force′s founder Timo Brouwer fears that this year′s recycling rates might be considerably lower because of ′green washing′ – a phenomenon in which companies claim to support sustainability without backing up their broadcasted ambitions.
Brouwer wants to expand his company in order to bolster Curaçao′s recycling capacity as well as its employment levels. The company′s target is to recycle 1.5 million PET bottles this year.
