The Herbold HOG Shredder is a single-rotor, size-reduction unit combining a knife-based granulator and a shredder. The advantages of the latter include insensitivity to foreign bodies, a large cutting angle and low-speed operation. The HGM series has been designed to handle particularly tough material or tramp-containing feedstock. The shredders may also be used for wet operations.
Potential applications include: pre-size reduced tyres; bottles from household waste; metal-reinforced rubber or plastic parts; and waste from car shredders.
From the construction standpoint, HOG shredders are heavier than conventional granulators and shredders. Their oversized rotor is equipped with knives in a helical configuration (see photo) while the inside of the machine features bolted wear plates. The hydraulically-operated, centrally-divided housing facilitates access to the cutting chamber for cleaning and maintenance purposes. Rotor knives are made from tool steel, while knife holders with interchangeable inserts can be mounted in special pouches on the rotor. The stator knives are mounted in knife holders and can be adjusted in a jig located outside the machine.
