Houston-based Greenstar North America (GNA) acquired Vista Fibers in Dallas and its parent company Mid America in October last year, thus providing Greenstar with significant recycling operations in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. According to GNA’s CEO Steve Ragiel, the company is planning to build a 180 000 square foot (16 700 square metre) single-stream recycling plant in San Antonio that will be among the largest, most automated single-stream facilities in North America and the largest in Texas. Its processing capacity will amount to 20 000 tonnes of materials a month.
Meanwhile, the UK division of Greenstar is to build one of London’€™s largest materials recycling facilities (MRFs) at an already-acquired site in Edmonton. Intended to process nearly 10% of north London’€™s waste, the £18 million (US$ 34.7 million) facility will be fitted with modern technology for high-quality processing of recyclable materials, according to the company. It will also serve as a depot for up to 60 vehicles specialising in the collection of commercial recyclables.
The Edmonton site is licensed to: process up to 250 000 tonnes of recyclables per annum through its MRF; and to handle a further 250 000 tonnes each year through its waste transfer station where operations are scheduled to start in November this year. The MRF is expected to come on stream next summer
Greenstar is a subsidiary of NTR Plc, an Ireland-based international developer and operator of renewable energy and recycling-based waste management systems.
