The deal is a further boost for the Pallion-based firm, which has witnessed increased activity over recent months as a result of the Government’s car scrappage scheme where car owners are given £2,000 for trading in an old car and buying a new one.
The scheme was yesterday extended so that it will see another 100,000 cars scrapped after the 300,000 traded in so far. The new owner wants to build on the success of the business and invest in the factory and increase the size of its 12-strong workforce.
EMR is one of the largest metal recycling companies in the world with over 100 sites around the globe, including 70 sites in the UK, with sites at Hartlepool, Blaydon, Tyne Dock and Middlesbrough in the North East.
The group has promised that the resources and equipment of the Sunderland firm, including a DVLA Authorised Treatment Facility for end of life vehicles and a fleet of HGVs, will be strengthened. EMR regional director Mike Seale said: “We are delighted to have acquired such a well established company in Sunderland.
’The new site will complement our existing operations in the North East and give us the opportunity to expand our processing activities in an area where we have focused largely on shipping in the past. EMR is well known for offering an excellent service and we are looking forward to reinforcing this reputation at our new site.’
