Europe – ‘The politicians that have responsibility for resource management must have enough power to make it happen’, stresses Jim Malone, the new director recycling at packaging major DS Smith. He succeeds Peter McGuinness, who becomes director of sustainability for the group.
Malone is to ′lead the Recycling Division in the next phase of development, growing the company through a mixture of organic growth and acquisition′, comments ceo Miles Roberts. Malone was European sales and purchasing director recycling at DS Smith and has worked at the company for 20 years. In his new role, he plans to continue championing the resource management industry, particularly since ′clear political leadership is still lacking to support future development of the sector′.
According to Malone, ′We are at a time when we need to assess many aspects of how regulations are working.′ He is curious when the EU emerges with new plans on the circular economy. ′We need to be agreeing the best way forward now rather than letting things slip month after month′, he argues.
DS Smith is a leading provider of corrugated and plastic packaging supported by paper and recycling operations in 25 countries, and employs 21 500 people.
