The Dutch division of global steel company Tata Steel is producing steel with 30% recycled content under the Zeremis Recycled brand.

The move was sparked by growing demand for recycled content products across the automotive, packaging and construction industries.

Closed loop strategy

The launch of Zeremis Recycled is part of Tata Steel’s sustainability strategy. As a next step, the company intends to expand its range of products with a high content of recycled materials.

Tata Steel Netherlands plans to transform into a ‘green steel’ company in the coming years. Its Green Steel plan targets a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. An important part of this mission is to increase production cycles through greater use of scrap.

Ultimately, the metals company aims to be fully carbon neutral by 2045.

Major backing

The Dutch government provided EUR 3 billion in subsidies to Tata Steel in IJmuiden. The funds will help decarbonise the plant and increase the sustainability of the country’s steel industry.

Tata Steel Netherlands increased steel production by 24% quarter-on-quarter to 1.48 million tonnes in January-March 2024, according to latest figures from the GMK Center.
