Sweden’s Polykemi Group says it is the first company in Kunshan, a city near Shanghai in China, to win approval for expanded capabilities in upgrading recycled plastic raw materials.

The certification enables the company to process alternative sources ‘beyond conventional recycled materials that would otherwise be used for energy recovery’. The increased availability of recycled plastic sources aligns with the growing market demand for high-quality sustainable materials, it says.

‘The approval is a testament to our ability to adapt and expand production to meet market needs,’ comments Magnus Lindahl, ceo of Polykemi Group China. ‘It demonstrates that high-quality recycled plastic materials can be produced on a global scale.’

Investment wave

To support the expansion, Polykemi Group has invested in advanced equipment to process a wider range of plastic raw materials, including dust, non-woven and fibre-based materials. Similar investments have been made at the company’s production facility in Sweden, further strengthening its global capacity.

Closer-to-home market

Since 2007, Polykemi Group has been manufacturing plastic compounds in Kunshan. With this new approval, the company can now produce upgraded, quality-assured recycled plastic materials, offering local customers enhanced availability and flexible deliveries. By manufacturing compounds closer to customers in Asia, the company reduces transportation distances and emissions.

According to Lindahl, the future for recycled and customised plastic materials looks bright. ‘We can now offer faster deliveries and larger quantities of sustainable materials to our customers in Asia. This development also encourages more companies to explore the benefits of using recycled plastics.’
