The US Commerce Department has released a new list of products containing steel and aluminium that will be subject to Section 232 tariffs, including scrap handling equipment and shredder wear parts.
The 50% duties were announced on 18 August and took immediate effect with no exception for goods in transit.
According to the US recyclers organisation ReMA, the expanded scope of products that will now be subject to the 50% duties includes 407 new steel and aluminium derivative HTS codes.
ReMA says it will undertake an analysis of the new list of product codes now subject to the 50% derivatives duty but has immediately identified:
- Lifters, material handlers, and loading conveyers under code 8428.90.03
- Shredder wear parts imported under code 8479.90.95
Metal content specific
Recycled steel and aluminium remain out of scope of the Section 232 steel and aluminium tariffs.
‘The 50% derivatives tariff applies only to the steel or aluminium content of the imported products, so the non-steel and non-aluminium content will not be subject to the Section 232 derivatives duty of 50% but will remain subject to other tariff programmes, such as the reciprocal tariffs,’ explains ReMA VP of international trade and global affairs Adam Shaffer.
