Japan’s scrap market is poised for future growth and is expected to hit EUR 41.5 billion by 2030, up from EUR 17.8 billion in 2023.

‘Japan’s waste management and recycling sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and technological innovation,’ observes Maximise Market Research. Its latest report suggests 12.9% compound annual growth until 2030 period.

Circular mindset

‘With limited landfill space and a high population density, Japan has prioritised efficient waste processing and recycling methods,’ analysts note. ‘The implementation of advanced technologies, such as automated sorting systems and smart bins, has enhanced the efficiency of waste collection and treatment.’

Government initiatives such as a Green Innovation Fund and an Eco-Town Programme underscore the nation’s commitment to a circular economy.

The country currently claims a 97% recycling rate for aluminium cans, 95% for vehicles, 87% for plastics and 81% for paper.
