* A-1 Specialized Services & Supplies, Inc.
A-1 Specialized Services & Supplies, Inc. of Croydon, Pennsylvania, U.S., has received two management certifications from the International Organization for Standardization, namely ISO 9001:2000 for quality management and ISO 14001:1996 for environmental management. A-1 is one of the world’s leading recyclers of platinum group metals, recovering automotive catalysts through a worldwide collection network and marketing the reclaimed metals. ’A-1 is like a vast mine, but better,’€™ says Director Ashok Kumar. ‘€˜We extract valuable resources from end-of-life products without mining millions of tons of rock and soil, and we make these resources available for new autocatalysts, protecting the world again from harmful air emissions.’€™
A-1 received the Keep America Beautiful award in 1998 for its environmental achievements. ‘€˜Now we are seeking worldwide recognition,’€™ notes Mr Kumar. ‘€˜These new ISO certifications, and the A-1 management systems for which they are granted, assure our suppliers and customers, our employees, and our communities that we are doing all that we can to provide the best in metals and services, for them and for the world in which we all live.’€™

* A I C Solutions
A I C Solutions (AICS) of Slough, U.K., has signed an agreement with GSM Miltek of Sweden to become agent for TECident Safety Systems in Scandinavia and thereby to provide the paper recycling industry with safety solutions. Conveyors feeding balers, shredders, sorters, etc can be a threat to personal safety, but traditional safety practice assumes that a person is conscious and able to reach an emergency stop device, or that a third party is present to monitor that person’€™s activity, it is explained. This risk can be reduced by integrating the TECident system into the baler control panel; this stops machinery when it identifies a person – either conscious or incapacitated – approaching dangerous equipment, thereby eliminating the need for large, stand-alone panels, induction loops, etc which impinge on production and floor space. According to AICS, TECident is the least expensive system available and can be expanded into many other areas of risk.
