The overall economic and financial crisis has not spared the international recycling industry. According to a statement of the Brussels-based BIR, the situation is worsened by the ’unprofessional behaviour of some buyers who completely ignore the terms of the contracts they signed some weeks ago with their sellers.’
Since prices have dropped dramatically, BIR says some buyers fail to pay their invoices or request substantial discounts, although they are legally bound by the prices fixed in their contracts. ’This unprofessional and unethical business behaviour seems to have mushroomed throughout the international recycling community and is causing serious financial difficulties for many sellers,’ BIR says.
BIR is currently investigating steps that member companies can take to avoid these situations. This important topic will be one of the main items on the agenda of the BIR International Trade Council which is planning to have a high level discussion involving all divisional Presidents in Düsseldorf, Germany next week.
