More than 1 100 recyclers and scrap traders from 58 countries have gathered in the Thai capital Bangkok for the Bureau of International Recycling’s Autumn convention. The conference and exhibition is taking place just days after the death of Queen Sirikit of Thailand.

The Land of Smiles is in deep mourning. Sirikit’s photo is on every government building. At the BIR conference venue, the Centara Grand in central Bangkok, her portrait has a prominent place where delegates can express their sympathy in a condolence book.

In her opening speech BIR president Susie Burrage, too, led a moment of silence in memory of the Thai Queen Mother.

Troubled markets

Back to business, Burrage highlighted tough market conditions recyclers continue to be dealing with. ‘Without open international markets, the recycling industry cannot thrive nor can it continue to invest in the innovation and technology that drive progress,’ she said.

BIR has announced that the next convention will take be held in Gothenburg, Sweden on 1–3 June 2026.
