The deal is valued at US$ 35 million.
Based in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, Inmetco employs 108 people and operates the only secondary smelter in North America dedicated to recycling nickel, chromium and other metals from hazardous and non-hazardous wastes generated mostly by stainless steel and specialty metals producers. The company is also a leading processor of nickel-cadmium batteries and its recycling process has been recognised by the US Environmental Protection Agency as the ’best demonstrated available technology’.
In 2008, Inmetco generated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of US$ 12.8 million on revenues of US$ 61.1 million. Total remelt alloy shipments amounted to approximately 27 000 tonnes.
According to Horsehead, the Inmetco deal will enhance its hazardous waste services platform and diversify its range of capabilities and products, including the recycling of EAF dust and stainless steel flue dust for the recovery and reuse of a wide range of metals. Horsehead’s Chairman, President and CEO Jim Hensler comments: ’The acquisition of Inmetco expands Horsehead’s industrial metals portfolio while leveraging our key strengths in hazardous waste management and high temperature metals recovery.’
