Known as UFH RE-cycling GmbH, the operation based in Kematen, Austria, covers an area of 15 000 m2 and can process approximately 300 000 units a year.
The new plant works on the principle of cryo-condensation and can process refrigerators containing CFCs as well as pentane. According to the joint venture partners, no time needs to be set aside for pre-sorting the units and so costs are reduced.
Gerhard Jokic, Managing Director of Remondis Electrorecycling, said during the opening ceremony: ’The UFH RE-cycling unit can achieve the highest extraction rate of CFK. Using this modern technique, we are ensured that about 95% of the material from old fridges can be recycled, which can be used for new appliances.’ According to the new venture, the facility will reduce Austria’s CO2 output by 900 000 tonnes per annum.
