This is vindication of its support for co-mingled recyclables, the company suggests, given that a large proportion of the Aldridge plant’s feedstock comes from collections of mixed recyclables.
CCIC’s inspection team has verified that the Aldridge facility’s entire recycling process produces dry recyclates – such as paper, cardboard, plastics and metals – to the required high quality that permits them to be exported direct to Chinese reprocessors and manufacturers. Greenstar has invested around £7 million (US$ 10.4 million) in developing the facility which processes both co-mingled and source-segregated domestic and commercial recyclables.
Greenstar UK’s CEO Ian Wakelin describes the approval as a ’fitting reward’ for the company’s ’commitment to quality recycling’. He notes: ’This news is strategically important to our ambition to be one of the country’s largest recycling-led waste specialists because we work in a global market.’
The Aldridge plant’s emphasis on technology, automation and scale (its annual capacity of 300 000 tonnes makes it one of the largest MRFs in the UK) enables Greenstar to deliver high-quality standards in its processed recyclates, according to Mr Wakelin.
And he adds: ’In these tough times, when national and international markets have reduced demand, quality is absolutely essential if you want to keep on selling recyclates. We’re processing all the recyclables we’re getting, and we’re selling all that we’re processing – and our quality focus is a key factor in persuading buyers and markets to take our materials.’
