The Nittetsu Shinko Metal Refine Co. joint venture is 70%-owned by Nippon Steel with Kobe Steel taking a 30% share.
To be based at Nippon Steel’s Hirohata works in the western Japan prefecture of Hyogo, the venture will feature a furnace costing Yen 20 billion which will be capable of processing 400 000 tonnes of steel dust and iron ore powder per year. Its annual output limit will be 300 000 tonnes of direct-reduced iron and 5000 tonnes of zinc. The facility will also handle steel dust and iron ore powder generated by Sanyo Special Steel Co., a Nippon Steel group company.
