According to the company it is part of their growing demand of scrap metal in steel making. The company is the fourth largest steel maker in China, it recently opened two scrap processing facilities in Fangshan and Fengtai, near Beijing. As part of the government’s depollution strategy, Shougang recently moved out of Beijing’s city centre.
The new facility covers 43 acres of land, and is able to process 350,000 tonnes on annual basis. The Xushui centre will be similar to the existing two centres, including cutting, pressing and grading the collected scrap. Xushui county is also a traditional scrap transaction centre in Hebei province where the scrap is mainly collected from Tianjin, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Shanxi.
A Shougang Daily report says that Fengtai base has provided 16,347 tonnes of scrap in June and Fangshan base supplied 26,551 tonnes with the quality of the feeds showing overall upswings. The two bases also bought some carriers to speed up the transport.
According to reports, leading domestic mills are all accelerating the pace for scrap base construction at the moment. Baosteel has built 8 scrap bases in Jiashan, Ningbo and Taizhou etc, Tianjin Pipe Group established scrap bases in Xushui and Zunhua etc and Sinosteel plans to construct a 2 million tonnes per year scrap processing base in Shenyang.
