China | The Chinese capital Beijing kicked off a collection and recycling project at all Olympic venues some two weeks before the opening of the latest summer Games.
Based on expected spectator numbers, some 14 000 tonnes of refuse – including paper, plastic bottles and medical waste – is thought likely to accumulate at the 31 venues in the city, according to the Beijing Municipal Administration Commission. Beijing has pledged to recycle at least 50% of this material – a figure met by most of the Olympic Games’ previous host countries.
Non-food refuse will be transported to four sorting centres and processing plants in Beijing’€™s suburbs, according to the commission.
