Uganda: $1.5m PET recycling firm expands

A US$1.5 million plastic bottles recycling facility in Uganda’s capital Kampala is going to be expanded to match the rate at which plastic products are manufactured. Expansion of the site, which belongs to local firm Plastic Recycling Industries, is also aimed at cleaning the environment while sustaining economic growth.

According to Alex Byarugaba, the project’s manager, the production of plastics is growing four times higher than the rate at which they are recycled in Uganda, creating a need to expand the recycling facility. He adds the company is targeting local and regional markets plus China for the recycled materials.
’Once the facility is expanded, the benefits will include saving natural resources, reduced emissions, environmental clean-up, reduction in use of landfills and direct and indirect job creation,’ Byarugaba explains.

’Responsibilities in the plastic industry include using a minimum amount of material possible which should be reused or recycled in a manner that does not endanger the future. Manufacturers who pollute the environment should clean it up,’ he suggests.
