Lack of harmonisation in the implementation of the EU Directive on Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is imposing a significant financial burden on retailers, prompting retail association Eurocommerce to demand an urgent review within the European Commission.
EU member states have adopted widely differing approaches to the implementation of the directive, according to Eurocommerce. For example, a recent survey highlighted the fact that varying national labelling requirements had forced retailers to develop separate product lines for the different national markets.
Welcoming rumours of a commission consultation on WEEE for later in the year, Eurocommerce says the review of the directive – which is due by 2008 – should be broad in its scope and should address all components of the legislation that are proving to be unworkable.
