Malaysia – Putrajaya Corporation wants private households in its part of Malaysia to be heavily penalised for their failure to support recycling, according to a report in ‘The Star’ newspaper.
The corporation’s President, Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, told the recent Putrajaya Recycling Day: ‘We are looking at imposing strict fines for those who do not recycle. This is in line with the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007, which was enforced in September last year.’
With council encouragement, public participation in recycling increased to 22% last year from 10.4% in 2010. The largest contributors of recyclable materials were government and private offices, followed by three recycling centres.
